"I requested two custom scents from Calder: the first was to bring me from the deepest roots of a tree up to the point where its top-most leaves touch the sky; the second to smell of soil and fruit. Calder was able to understand and interpret these esoteric requests with passion, cleverly incorporating measures of stone, musk, wood, leaf, flower, and fruit — and an unexpected ingredient or two — to achieve a perfect balance. Though the requests were similar, Calder managed to make each scent distinct, and people were fascinated by them. The process was fun and personal, and each new element added to the mix came with a story about its science or its history, and how it might wear on clothes versus skin.
